Alonzo Applauds Garza Early College High School at Mountain View College on winning National Award width=71Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN Texas Over a month ago this Capitol Report was one of the first to report to you that our very own Trinidad Trini" Garza Early College High School at Mountain View College was one of only five high schools in the country to be named a finalist for the National Center of Urban School Transformations 2012 Excellence in Urban Education Award. Well the news this time is even more exciting now: the school has won making it the only DISD school to win this year..  Once again I commend Trinidad Trini" Garza Early College High School at Mountain View College on this prestigious honor. I am familiar with the exemplary work dedicated commitment and unparalleled educational environment that this school and its faculty provides our at-risk students - many of whom would not get a second chance elsewhere said Rep. Alonzo. To me this award speaks volumes about the exemplary dedication commitment and educational excellence that Trini Garza Early College High School is doing in turning these students and their teachers into a winner by recognizing their outstanding work and results. I am so proud of all students and faculty at the school continued Rep. Alonzo. The National Center for Urban School Transformation presented the school with the Excellence in Urban Education Award on March 16 2012 during a national announcement in which forty-eight schools in 36 school districts and 15 states have won the honor since 2006. Garza currently serves 393 students who are working toward earning their high school diplomas and an Associates degree from Mountain View College or 48 core college credit hours toward a bachelors degree. The high school opened in August 2006 through a partnership between Mountain View College and the Dallas Independent School District. The school is a Texas Education Agency Recognized school and was also honored by Greatschools.org with a distinguished rating of 10 out of 10. Greatschools.org is the countrys leading source of information at on school performance. Trinidad Trini" Garza Early College High School at Mountain View College has become a national model of success due to the commitment of its teachers support staff parents partner organizations and most importantly the students" said Dr. Janice Lombardi Principal Trinidad Trini" Garza Early College High School at Mountain View College. The award celebrates urban schools that serve low-income communities and overcome multiple challenges yet their students are performing well academically. Not only is the dropout rate very high in the surrounding schools in the Mountain View College service area but the college-going rate among ninth graders is among the lowest in the state. Nevertheless the TGECHS at MVC has produced an unprecedented graduation rate among area high schools.
