Charter School provides resources to help at-risk youth reach their education dreams
Texas Insider Report: DALLAS Texas Texans Can Academies a charter high school organization serving dropouts and potential dropouts today announced that
during the 2011-2012 school year 94 of their 1255 graduating seniors were accepted to college. Richard Marquez Can Academies CEO who has spent many years working in public schools had the idea of creating a College & Career Center for graduating seniors three years earlier.
His vision has now been fully realized. Through the work of the Can Academies and ReadyToWork centers were created on all 10 Texans Can Academy Campuses to provide every senior student with college and career readiness services that are not found on the average American high school.
Every senior attending a Texans Can Academy school:
- Completed a Career Inventory
- Was asked to fill out Scholarship Applications
- Received help with FAFSA
- Wrote resumes and
- Applied for acceptance to college.
The average award per student was equal to $2300.
Yolanda Cruz Wilder Chief Schools Officer said This is proof of the fact that if charter schools like Texans Can Academy are able to provide these services for students who are dropouts and potential dropouts every parent in Texas should expect the same for their senior."
ReadyToWork is a for profit company that was established in 2006 to provide work training in the area of logistics. They partnered with Texans Can Academies to develop the college and career model.
The fact that ReadyToWork is a for profit company providing services in a public school through the use of state funding makes the model even much more unique.
