Texas will improve the lives of our heroes and give them the care and opportunities they have earned in service to our nation" said Governor Greg Abbott earlier today while hosting a signing ceremony at VFW Post 76 in San Antonio the oldest VFW hall in Texas.    Gov. Abbott highlighted multiple bills to implement his veterans initiative. The legislation Abbott signed will improve mental health care exempt veteran-owned businesses from the franchise tax and create more job opportunities for our veterans as well as establish the Texas Women Veterans Program.

  • SB 1049 (Campbell R-New Braunfels; Sheets R-Dallas): relating to an exemption from the franchise tax and certain filing fees for certain businesses owned by veterans during an initial period of operation in the state.
  • SB 1358 (Campbell R-New Braunfels; King R-Abilene): relating to the Texas Military Preparedness Commission and strategic planning regarding military bases and defense installations.
  • HB 19 (King R-Abilene; Campbell R-New Braunfels): relating to a preventive services program and mental health programs for veterans and military families.
  • HB 867 (Hernandez D-Houston; Garcia D-Houston): relating to the establishment and operation of the Texas Women Veterans Program.
EdmondsonCommanderColonelMicheleAt the signing ceremony Abbott also took the opportunity to discuss his $30 million budget appropriation for the Texas Military Preparedness Commission (TMPC) that will protect Texas military bases from potential closure or realignment under the Base Realignment & Closure Commission (BRAC). Prior to hosting this event Abbott addressed the graduating class of the 737th Training Group at Lackland Air Force Base led by Commander Colonel Michele C. Edmondson (right).
