Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN Texas The American Conservative Union says a House bill to subsidize the purchase of natural gas vehicles is going in the wrong direction at a time when Americans are looking for less government interference as well as deficit and debt reduction. HR 1380 the NAT GAS Act would hand out tax credits of up to $64000 for purchasers of Natural Gas Vehicles as well as extend the 50 cent per gallon subsidy for liquid or compressed natural gas.
ACU Executive Director Gregg Keller said the bill is the last thing we need just as Congress approaches a critical showdown over long term deficit and debt reduction.
While Americans are paying $4 per gallon to fill up their tank this bill would spend over $9 billion to promote one type of vehicle that apparently people would not otherwise buy Keller said. I can understand why liberal Democrats such as Raul Grijalva would support this bill. They like the idea of using government power to help decide what people should buy. But those conservatives who have signed up as co-sponsors of the bill should know better.
Keller said ACU is mobilizing grass roots opposition to the bill and is asking conservative members of Congress to reject requests to support the bill as a co-sponsor or if already a co-sponsor to ask their name be removed from the bill.
The NAT GAS Act is the type of special interest legislation the American people said they were fed up with in November Keller said. We hope by taking a stand early in the process we will stop the bill dead in its tracks.
