Texas High School Seniors University Students Over 21 Vie for Two $5000 Scholarships

AUSTIN State Rep. Dan Flynn is teaming up with the Texas Hospitality Association (THA) to fight underage drinking and to promote alcohol responsibility through a poster contest that will award students two $5000 scholarships.
On the heels of the successful 2008 Dont Serve Alcohol To Teens" campaign THA is sponsoring two statewide poster design and slogan contests; one for high school seniors and a second for college and university students 21 years and older.
THA will award two $5000 scholarships to the two students who design the best poster and slogan. The theme for the high school students is Underage drinking (under 21) in Texas is against the law." For the college university and technical students the theme will be: A beer (12 oz) mixed drink (1.5 oz liquor) and glass of wine (5 oz) each contain the same amount of alcohol." The two winning posters will be distributed statewide to establishments selling or serving alcohol.
We are very excited about involving Texas high school students in developing a message that will combat underage drinking in their age group" said Rep. Flynn.
Having students over age 21 emphasize the fact that a drink is a drink regardless of whether it is beer wine or a mixed drink reminds all Texans of the need for alcohol awareness" Rep. Flynn said.
The contest is open to Texas high school seniors and registered college and university students over 21 years of age. Artwork must be an original design and may be computer or electronically generated hand drawn or photographed.
Participating students will have until May 8 to design and submit their poster and slogan to THA. Ten finalists will be selected in each category.
The two winners will be determined by a vote of each Texas Legislative office and a presentation ceremony is planned during the closing days of this legislative session.
