
State Representative Mark Strama will kick off the annual Anthropos Arts end-of-year concert on Sunday May 17th at the legendary Stubbs BBQ. The show features performances by East Austin students in grades 612 who have spent the last several months receiving individualized instruction from some of Austins finest professional musicians. These musician-mentors will perform with the students.
This isnt just about music" says Ral Vallejo the award-winning trombone player and a regular Anthropos musician-mentor. Its about self-confidence self-esteem and developing the presence to perform on-stage at a huge public venue. For our students this program can be a life-changing experience."
The student and mentor performance from 5:307:00 p.m. will be followed by a full performance by Austins own country-rock trendsetters The Gourds. Tickets are good for both shows and are now on sale through Front Gate Tickets ($15 budurl.com/Anth10th).
Anthropos Arts music-education programs now in their 10th year pair students from Title I schools in East Austin together with musician-mentors for free in-school lessons on music theory performance technique and improvisation.
At the annual concert every student performs at least one improvised solo before friends family and the general public.
In all approximately 80 studentsmany of whom are receiving individualized instruction for the first timefrom 10 schools will take the stage on Sunday May 17th at Stubbs Waller Creek Amphitheatre.
