Battle for Protecting Unborn Only the Beginning

By Senator Dan Patrick Forces will continue to fight in the courts width=71Although I passed the Sonogram Bill through the Texas Senate in 2007 and 2009 both bills died in the House. In 2011 the bill became a priority for Republicans and it finally passed. Unfortunately this was only the beginning of the battle for protecting the unborn. As you know I have worked for five years to pass legislation that protects women who are considering abortion by providing them with as much information as possible before making this life-altering decision. Pro-abortion advocates took their fight to a Federal District Court in Austin. Although U.S. District Judge Sam Sparks initially enjoined the Sonogram Bill from taking effect the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals stepped in and reversed Sparks decision. In a bitterly worded order Judge Sparks stated that the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals tied his hands and forced him to preserve an unconstitutional law. I have never doubted the constitutionality of the Sonogram Bill and I am glad the 5th Circuit stepped in to turn back this blatant judicial activism. Although I am sure that pro-abortion forces will continue to fight this landmark legislation in the courts I am gratified to know that the Sonogram Bill is already protecting women and saving lives in Texas. To read more about this situation here is a story from the Houston Chronicle.
