WASHINGTON DC House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) issued the following statement on tomorrows 65th anniversary of the D-Day landings on the beaches of Normandy:
Tomorrow marks the 65th anniversary of the D-Day landings on the beaches of Normandy of allied American British Canadian and Free French forces. Under the command of American generals Dwight D. Eisenhower and Omar Bradley and British general Bernard Law Montgomery 160000 troops were landed in the largest amphibious invasion in world history.
The successful D-Day landings were the culmination of incredible logistical preparation industrial mobilization and years of training by the Allied combat forces. D-Day hastened the end of Adolf Hitlers tyrannical and murderous Nazi regime and was a huge step toward the liberation of Europe and the unconditional surrender of German military forces on May 8 1945.
The dramatic events of that day were indelibly etched into the memory of those who survived and riveted the attention of Americans on the home front. President Franklin D. Roosevelt in a national radio address led Americans in prayer for strength in the struggle to preserve our Republic our religion and our civilization and to set free a suffering humanity.
In praying for Gods protection of the troops President Roosevelt noted They fight to let justice arise and tolerance and goodwill among all Thy people. They yearn but for the end of battle for their return to the haven of home. Some will never return. Embrace these Father and receive them Thy heroic servants into Thy kingdom.
Forty years later on Omaha Beach another President Ronald Reagan pledged that Americans will never forget the sacrifices for freedom made on the Normandy beaches on D-Day: We will always remember. We will always be proud. We will always be prepared so we may always be free.

The bravery and skill displayed by our forces on D-Day continue on in our American troops deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. As we remember the events of D-Day 65 years ago let us also remember our soldiers sailors airmen and Marines facing down a determined foe in the defense of liberty and freedom."
