Brownsville Corpus Christi Airports Receive Advanced Imaging Technology

width=71WASHINGTON--U.S. Rep. Solomon P. Ortiz (D-Texas) today announced deployments of advanced imaging technology (AIT) units purchased with American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds to the Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport and the Corpus Christi International Airport. These advanced imaging technology units will strengthen security at airports throughout the country while boosting local economies. The airports in Brownsville and Corpus Christi will benefit from these imaging units as we strengthen security at our airports in South Texas" Ortiz said. These advanced imaging technology units have the capability of detecting threats that could endanger the safety of our passengers including non-metallic threats." Advanced imaging technology is designed to bolster security by safely screening passengers for metallic and non-metallic threats--including weapons explosives and other objects concealed under layers of clothing. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funded machines will include the latest security enhancements to detect new and evolving threats according to the Department of Homeland Security. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has purchased 450 AIT units with American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding to date and currently there are 58 AIT units deployed at 24 airports nationwide. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) ensures passenger privacy through the anonymity of AIT images--a privacy filter is applied to blur all images; in the operational mode images are permanently deleted immediately once viewed and are never stored transmitted or printed; and the officer viewing the image is stationed in a remote location so as not to come into contact with passengers being screened. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act was signed into law on Feb. 17 2009 and committed more than $3 billion for homeland security projects through the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the General Services Administration (GSA). Of the $1 billion allocated to Transportation Security Administration (TSA) for aviation security projects $734 million is dedicated to screening checked baggage and $266 million is allocated for checkpoint explosives detection technologies.
