Cantor: Children in Dire Need Must Come First

Struggling families across America have a right to expect accountability from their government

width=65WASHINGTON D.C. –  House Republican Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA) issued the following statement as the U.S. House of Representatives prepared to consider the expansion of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) a program created to give low-income children access to high quality affordable health care:

“SCHIP was created to ensure that children in low-income families have access to high quality affordable health care.  Given the already limited dollars available in our current environment we must ensure that SCHIP effectively helps the children for which it was intended before any expansion is considered.

“We are extremely concerned that any proposed expansion would include adults illegal immigrants and those who already have private health insurance – which would reduce the amount spent on health care for children in dire need.

“We are prepared to work expeditiously with the President-elect and Democrats in Congress to pass responsible legislation that is consistent with the intent of the SCHIP program – helping the children of the working poor.

“Struggling families across America have a right to expect accountability from their government.  Focusing on low-income children first would ensure the bipartisan agreement that this program deserves.”
