Washington DC – House Conference Secretary John Carter (TX-31) made the following statement today after attending the ceremony at the White House honoring Pope Benedict XVI. This was the first papal White House visit in 29 years.
“It was a great honor to attend the ceremony at the White House honoring Pope Benedict XVI.
“The pope discussed the link designed by our founding fathers between our governing principles and the moral values based on God. I share the Pope’s call for our nation to stay true to the faith it was founded on.
“One of the most powerful moments for me was when the Pope said ‘Freedom is not only a gift but also a summons to personal responsibility.’ I echo his call and am reminded that as an American I must never forget the sacrifices made by those who fight everyday for our freedom.”
