Washington D.C. – U.S. Representative John Carter (TX-31) made the following statement today after winning re-election to the United States House of Representatives and announcing his intent to run for House Republican Conference Secretary.
“I am first and foremost grateful to God my family and neighbors for allowing me the opportunity to serve for another two years in Congress.
“Republicans have just battled through one of the toughest political fights in our history but we must put our losses behind us reinforce our lines and prepare for the next battle. We need to push forward with energy and purpose to recover from yesterday’s disappointing losses and I am fully committed to doing my part to put our party back in the majority.
“We must return to and fight for our timeless Republican principles and place them in the context of big ideas the American people can understand. Additionally we must return to our winning philosophy that government is more the problem than the solution.
“As the Conference Secretary I have worked hard to provide a level of service between Members and the Republican leadership. I have undertaken several initiatives to expand new communication resources help facilitate the adjustment of new members and address many individual member needs and concerns. If re-elected I promise to fight for your interests and exemplify the bare-knuckles hard-working approach we need to succeed.
“I will also take on new roles. I will lead the charge in holding the Democrats accountable for violating their promise to conduct ‘the most ethical Congress in history.’ This role has been neglected within our leadership and is one I am willing to take on.
“Last night was hard but we must remember that America is a center right country. A desperate desire for change prompted Americans to elect the most liberal Senator as their next president. Just as the Democrats made history this past Election Day we Republicans have a chance to make our own.
If we commit ourselves to our conservative principles and remember who we represent we will win back the hearts and minds of the American people. I am prepared to help lead our Conference in this new direction and ask that you join me.”
