Today’s Logic Letter

Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN, Texas – Dear Lojiks,
The manure hit the fan yesterday with the CBO estimate that Obamacare will kill 2.3 million jobs. Here’s the key thing to remember. Government estimates NEVER hit the mark and reality is ALWAYS worse.
That means even more people will be hurt by this awful law. Obama will fight back and attack the CBO to the extent he can.
And we’re talking about immigration. The good news is that it appears as it the TEA PARTY could kill the immigration bill by the simple fact of putting up a credible opponent for Mitch McConnell. Is politics wonderful, or what? Because of his opponent, McConnell can’t play ball with Harry Reid on immigration. Don’t ever let anybody tell you there isn’t a God.
There is another letter to the editor in the Temple Daily Telegram about Judy Morales, the illegally-serving member of the City Council. I find myself amazed by some of these letters. This one points out what an asset Morales has been to the city and that we should have “great respect” for the Latino community.
This issue is not about what Morales has been or respect for any community. This is about two things: (1) Is she serving illegally? Yes. (2) Did she commit crimes in using government successor and then try to expunge the record? That is the subject of what should be a criminal investigation.
I want Mrs. Morales to demonstrate integrity. She is not eligible to serve and that is not at issue. She should resign and plan to run again, assuming she becomes eligible and she wants the job. But the the criminal issues are out of her hands. In some cases, actions that she has been accused of in printed stories are serious crimes. I believe that if she didn’t know what she was doing when she committed these actions (assuming the reports are correct — and we need a full investigation), then she is not smart enough to serve on a city council.
I do not fault her for not knowing that she was ineligible to serve under an old charter rule. Few people knew of it. But once it was discovered, she had a problem and she failed to deal with it. What does her being an “asset” or “respect for the Latino community” have to do with it? This is about Judy Morales and what kind of person she really is. And it is about a Temple City Council that practices cronyism and gets away scott free because nobody in the city cares. A few of us do. We hold all government officials to a high standard. What say you?
The State Comptroller debate at Tenroc last night was informative. It should be up on t-span.tv soon. My takeaway: We have to reform property taxes in Texas — or do away with them. Fortunately, we have good candidates for this office.
Should I apologize for wanting government officials of high character? I suppose, if I want to live in Temple, I need to join the Good Ole Boy Network, get on the Council, and get contracts for my company. And I’ll bet you that wherever you live — if you dig — you’ll find your own integrity problems within local government.
So dig. Especially if you are a reporter. A reporter’s job is not to be liked. It is to report the truth, whatever it is.
Logically,
Lynn Woolley
