With the Christmas Holidays fast approaching and many families hurting financially what better way to honor our service and women and tell them how much we appreciate them for their service to our country than through this extraordinary Cell Phones for Soldiers program. Without a doubt having a cell phone or a prepaid calling card at their disposal to call home and talk to family and friends would brighten their holidays and lift their Christmas spirits tremendously especially when you consider the fact that many of them are thousands of miles away across the world said Rep. Alonzo.
Veterans Day was celebrated less than one month ago and many of us might have taken off the holiday from work or celebrated with family and friends here in the US however as I have reiterated before we must remember our service men and women year-round and not just one day out of the year. Please let us not forget their commitment as we find ourselves with the deployment of so many young men and women from this area of Texas serving in Iraq Afghanistan and other battle-torn countries - defending us at war or in peace-keeping missions abroad continued Rep. Alonzo.
Many of us take our cell phones MP3 players or iPods for granted since we have such easy access to them however for many of our brave service men and women a simple 5 or 10 minute conversation with their loved ones could make a world of difference. I urge everyone to recycle their cell phones and make a difference in a soldiers life especially during the Christmas Holidays concluded Rep. Alonzo.
The Cell Phones for Soldiers program was founded by Brittany and her younger brother Robbie Bergquist in 2004. To date they have collected more than 7.5 million cell phones and provided military personnel with more than 90 million minutes of pre-paid calling cards. The programs main revenue stream comes from the recycling of used cell phones. Currently there are more than 6000 Cell Phones for Soldiers collection sites across the country.
Not only is the program able to help our military men and women but also keeps toxic wastes out of landfills. According to the programs website the ability to call home while serving our country is a costly challenge that approximately 65 percent of families either do not have access to or simply cannot afford to do because of economics.
