Child Protection Roundtable Presents Legislators of the Year Awards

width=83Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN Texas Today the Child Protection Roundtable honored two outstanding members of the Texas Legislature to be the Child Protection Roundtables Legislators of the Year.  Senator Carlos I. width=146Uresti was selected from the Texas Senate and John Zerwas was selected from the Texas House of Representatives. The legislators were honored at an awards luncheon hosted by the Child Protection Roundtable at the Austin Club. The event took place from 11:30 to 1:00 and was attended by members of the Child Protection Roundtable and special guests. During the presentation of the award to Senator Carlos Uresti The Honorable Scott McCown Executive Director of Center for Public Policy Priorities remarked Senator Carlos Uresti has been fighting for Texas Children over the course of his entire legislative career.  He has taken on the epidemic of child maltreatment.  He is a legislative leader in finding solutions including his creation of the local and Statewide Blue Ribbon Task Force.  The statewide task force is developing a comprehensive and strategic plan to prevent and reduce child abuse and neglect in Texas. For all of his past and present efforts The Child Protection Roundtable wholeheartedly salutes the Honorable Carlos Uresti our Legislator of the Year." During the presentation of the award to Representative John Zerwas Jaime Capelo former Texas House of Representatives member and consultant to the Child Protection Roundtable remarked During the 82nd Legislative Session Dr. Zerwas was instrumental in protecting critical child protective services and stood strong in the face of fierce opposition. He also fought to ensure that child abuse prevention programs like the Nurse-Family Partnership received funding to go forward.  Dr. Zerwas you truly are the Legislator of the Year for the children of Texas." The Child Protection Roundtable (CPRT) was initiated and is facilitated by TexProtects to bring together research experts advocates and program providers in the field of child protection in order to develop a legislative policy agenda and to advocate for child protection with one voice.  The goal of the CPRT is to generate consensus public policy items and to promote and assist in the implementation of these solutions.  The CPRT has over 35 statewide organizations that actively seek to reduce child abuse in Texas and improve outcomes for abused and neglected children.
