AUSTIN Texas--Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse (CALA) of Central Texas a nonprofit legal watchdog group announced Tuesday that it has selected John Drogin to serve as its new Executive Director.
Drogin brings 10 years of experience in public affairs communications and grassroots outreach to the position. He succeeds Kirsten Voinis who served as Executive Director since 2002.
Kirsten did an outstanding job for CALA and we thank her for her commitment and dedication over the years said Clay McPhail CALA of Central Texas chairman. Im confident John Drogin will build on the growth she achieved for our organization.
McPhail said CALAs mission to raise awareness of the cost and consequences of lawsuit abuse will be underscored during the current legislative session as some personal injury lawyers attempt to convince lawmakers to weaken lawsuit reforms enacted in Texas in recent years or create new avenues for lawsuits.
One of the reasons Texas is the best place to do business in America is because of the lawsuit reforms our legislators have passed over the years said McPhail who is president and CEO of Cozumel Restaurant Group operating as El Arroyo. As a small business owner I know first hand that rolling back these reforms or creating new ways to sue in Texas will only hamstring employers and our ability to create new jobs; that clearly would not be a good move in any economy and especially not in todays.
CALA of Central Texas Vice Chairman Roger Borgelt a partner at Potts & Reilly LLP said: Lawsuit reforms have injected a healthy dose of common sense and fairness into our civil justice system which helps not only job creation but also helps taxpayers and consumers. Protecting that progress and rejecting any attempts by some personal injury lawyers to weaken reforms to line their own pockets is paramount. John will help lead that effort in this exciting new chapter for CALA of Central Texas.
Added Drogin We know common sense reforms have worked for Texas. Doctors are flocking to our state and hospitals here are making new investments in high-risk care and expanded emergency room services. And we know that our common sense reforms have helped create jobs here earned Texas a top spot as the best place to do business and made us home to more Fortune 500 headquarters than any other state in the nation.
John Drogin served as press secretary to U.S. Sen. John Cornyn in Washington D.C. for nearly six years. He has worked on several national and statewide political campaigns assisting with both communications and grassroots efforts. Previously he worked as a print and broadcast journalist in Rome Italy for two years.
