Texas remains one of only 15 states clinging to archaic Blue Law
Austin TX – Americans for Prosperity (AFP) today announced support for repealing the state’s remaining Blue Law restrictions on Sunday sales. This week Colorado will become the 35th state to allow liquor sales on Sundays.
Americans for Prosperity-Texas announced that it was time for Texas to modernize its outdated and inefficient alcohol sales restrictions.
“Like Colorado Texas consumers deserve increased convenience more choices and equal access to products” said Peggy Venable director of AFP-Texas. “The restriction on Sunday sales is a government intrusion into the marketplace. The state should not dictate when Texans can purchase a legal product arbitrarily impeding commerce and creating winners (beer and wine) and losers (distilled spirits).”
Venable noted that Colorado is the 13th state since 2002 to strike down their Sunday sales ban law bringing the total number of states that permit Sunday sales of spirits to 35. Only 15 states—including Texas—continue to cling to outdated Blue Laws banning Sunday alcohol sales.
Texans living near a border can go to Mexico New Mexico or Louisiana for Sunday sales.
Venable said “States across the country are modernizing their liquor laws to get the government out of the way and Texas should join this trend.”
