AUSTIN – Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples today recognized more than 100 Texas farms and ranches at the 32nd annual Family Land Heritage ceremony in Austin. The ceremony was held in the Senate Chamber at the Texas Capitol.

“Each person here today has an impressive story to tell. Your ancestors dreamed of owning land and building a life better than the one they’d left behind” Commissioner Staples said.  “They survived frontier life and hardships with courage and ingenuity.  You are the living proof they succeeded.  You’re keeping their dream alive today.”
The Family Land Heritage Program recognizes families who have kept their farms and ranches in continuous agricultural production for more than 100 years and 126 properties were honored for 2006.  Twelve of the properties have been in continuous production for 150 years or more.

To date more than 4200 Texas farms and ranches in 232 counties have been recognized by the Family Land Heritage Program. Three counties Dawson Hale and Winkler were added to the list of counties with honored farms and ranches for the 2006 induction.

Cowboy poet and entertainer Red Steagall performed at the ceremony. Ron Oliveira a well-known Texas broadcaster served as master of ceremonies.

“The land you have nurtured – the land you have loved and cared for will forever be a part of the past present and future of this great state” Commissioner Staples said.  “You are committed stewards of one of Texas’ greatest resources.”
