Comptroller Combs Texas PTA Reaffirm Priorities for Children

susan-combs(AUSTIN) Texas Comptroller Susan Combs reiterated her long-time commitment to Texas children and nutrition by praising Texas PTA for teaching children healthy habits and making continued efforts to educate parents about health problems posed by the childhood obesity epidemic. I commend Texas PTA for promoting childrens health well-being and academic success" Combs said. Research shows healthy eating habits can improve attendance energy levels classroom participation school behavior test scores and academic success. Because good health is linked to learning ability we must ensure tomorrows adults develop healthy minds and bodies by eating nutritious food and engaging in physical activity." Texas PTA has a history of supporting improved school nutrition and efforts to reduce childhood obesity. During the 81st Regular Session of the Texas Legislature Texas PTA promoted healthy lifestyles through increased physical education and activity in Texas schools and sought rigorous implementation of the Texas Public School Nutrition Policy. The association also encourages parent education regarding healthy lifestyles. Texas PTA continues to raise awareness and engage families educators and communities to come together and improve texaschildrens health and wellness" Combs said. Their advocacy and involvement educates parents to raise healthier more active kids" said Combs.  Combs has long supported the work of Texas PTA which has honored her efforts over the years. In addition to receiving accolades for her work in obesity wellness and nutrition Combs recently won the Honorary Life Membership award and was named to PTAs Legislative Honor Roll for her assistance and support in the campaign to add school supplies to the list of tax-exempt items during the sales tax holiday weekend in August. Combs staff assisted Texas PTA in determining the fiscal impact of expanding the list of items eligible for an exemption during the sales tax holiday weekend. Texas PTA is the largest child advocacy organization in the state with more than 600000 members. For more than 100 years the association continues to fulfill its mission to be a powerful voice for all children a relevant resource for families and communities and a strong advocate for the education and well being of every child.
