Cong. Green Attends Community EPA Meeting Advocates for Sam Jacinto Waste Pits Removal

gene-greenTexas Insider Report: HOUSTON Texas  On Wednesday the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) held a community update meeting regarding the San Jacinto Waste Pits Superfund Site. During the meeting officials discussed previous damage to the temporary armored cap which separates the dioxin-containing waste pits from the surrounding environment and local communities. Dioxin is a highly toxic pollutant that is linked to cancer and reproductive and developmental problems.
We appreciate the EPAs work on this issue and for giving our community the opportunity to share our concerns about the waste pits. The recently-discovered damage to the temporary cap and exposure of dioxin from the site into the environment are very troubling and further highlight the necessity for the EPA to completely remove these toxic waste pits out of the San Jacinto River.  Only full removal of the waste pits will provide the permanent solution that our communities in east Harris County deserve."
Congressman Gene Green has been active in calling for the EPA to fully remove the waste pits since they were first discovered a decade ago. At last nights community meeting the EPA said it would announce its final decision within a year.
