Texas Insider Report: WASHINGTON D.C. The Department of State has not released information to Congress required by law detailing what Pakistan Yemen Somalia and 10 other countries are doing to eliminate safe havens for terrorists and what those countries are doing to prevent terrorists from reconstituting their efforts to attack the United States. The ultimate job of this Homeland Security Subcommittee is to protect the American people and without this information we cannot adequately do our jobs.
Further the revelation that Osama Bin Laden had found safe haven in Pakistan for several years less than one mile from that countrys military academy underscores the need to examine Pakistans willingness to cooperate with the United States and its efforts to deny safe havens.
This is especially concerning because Pakistan has been known to proliferate nuclear weapons.
Debt Limit Not Increased
Last week the House voted overwhelmingly to reject President Obamas request to increase our nations debt limit. This vote should send a strong message to the President and to Congressional Democrats that Republicans are serious about tackling our runaway spending binge instead of saddling future generations with record debt.
It is time for the President to listen to the American peoples demand to stop spending money that we do not have and work with Congress to enact a long term debt reduction plan that revives the economy and restores confidence in our markets. Anything short of significant spending cuts and reforms to reduce our national debt is unacceptable.
Department of Homeland Security Budget
The House passed and I supported the Department of Homeland Security Appropriations Act for FY2012. This bipartisan bill includes $500 million for border security fencing infrastructure and technology.
Additionally this bill prohibits DHS funds from being used to transfer or release Khalid Sheikh Mohammed or any other Guantanamo Bay detainee into the United States.
War Powers Resolution
On Friday I voted for and the House approved H. Res. 292 which reasserts Congress constitutional authority in the US militarys role in Libya. The president has not asked for congressional authorization of our militarys continued involvement and the Congress has not granted it.
H. Res. 292 requires the president to provide within 14 days information on the mission that should have been provided from the start; and reaffirms our previous vote against the use of ground troops.
Cybersecurity Legislation
Last week I laid out House Republicans agenda for cybersecurity legislation in my role as a Vice Chair of Speaker Boehners Technology Working Group.
I also introduced the bipartisan Cybersecurity Enhancement Act of 2011 which will help harden federal networks spur research and development build our American cyber workforce and ease collaboration between the public and private sector and universities.
