Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN Texas The ambush of two U.S. federal agents is a game changer and I believe it requires a forceful response. Last weeks tragic events in Mexico represent a major turning point in the United States involvement in Mexicos war on the drug cartels.

ICE AGENT KILLED
Jaime Zapata and Victor Avila both ICE agents were driving an SUV with US diplomat plates when 10-15 cartel members in two vehicles forced them off the highway.
When the agents identified themselves as Americans the cartels responded with a barrage of gunfire from their AK 47s killing Agent Zapata and wounding
Agent Avila. At least 83 shell casings were found.
For the first time in 25 years US diplomats no longer operate under the understanding that the cartels will not use violence against them.
U.S. ROLE IN MEXICO
It is in the best interest of both of our countries to prevent Mexico from becoming a failed state completely run by the cartels. But we must operate more effectively.
In the coming weeks I intend to hold hearings to clearly establish our countrys role in helping Mexico fight its drug war.
We must also discuss the commitment we need from the Mexican government to ensure the safety of US diplomats and federal agents operating across our Southwest border and re-examine the 1990 accord with Mexico which prevents US federal agents from carrying weapons.
Sending our agents into this war zone unarmed puts them in the bulls eye as sitting targets.
