Cong. Michael McCaul: The Mexican border presents a clear & present danger to the state of Texas.&"

/By George Scaggs Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN Texas  The Obama administration has largely ignored Texas in its modest efforts to secure the US border with Mexico.  Now that we (Republicans) are in the majority we have an opportunity to make changes that should have been prioritized long ago such as intensifying southbound checkpoints to confiscate guns and cash going into Mexico.  An estimated $25-30 billion a year flows south across the border.  Confiscating this drug money could pay for other resources we need to secure the border."

In last weeks hearing before the Texas Senates Committee on Homeland Security Congressman Michael McCaul (10th District-TX) appeared to testify on recent border developments including the murder of a federal ICE agent in Mexico. The committee chaired by Senator Tommy Williams also heard from the Executive Director of the Texas Border Sheriffs Coalition Donald Raey and various law enforcement officials. During the hearing Williams stated that the situation on the Mexican border had digressed to the point that it presents a clear and present danger to the state of Texas." McCaul noted that the ambush of two U.S. federal agents by a Mexican cartel two weeks ago represented an escalation in border related violence and was the first instance of U.S officials being targeted by the cartels. Congressman McCaul also warned the committee that security threats stemming from our porous southern border extend beyond the drug cartels and that signs of radical Islamic factions are increasingly occurring.

Congressman Michael McCaul represents Texas 10th Congressional District. He is a Member of the House Border Security & Immigration Reform Committee. McCaul authored the 2006 report A Line in the Sand: Confronting the Threat at the Southwest Border exposing the rise of the drug cartels and the potential exploitation of our borders by terrorist groups.
