Cong. Reyes on Military Intervention Libya and U.S.-International Partnerships

While I support the Presidents decision to use force in Libya the Administration must work closely with Congress ... width=71Texas Insider Report: WASHINGTON D.C. Congressman Silvestre Reyes (D-TX) Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Tactical Air and Land Forces released the following statement on todays military intervention by the U.S. and international partners to establish a No-Fly Zone in Libya to protect civilians from further attacks by government forces: The international community made clear that further attacks by the Libyan government against its own civilians will not be tolerated.  Todays military response against Libyan forces will enforce the actions taken by the United States and our partners in the United Nations Security Council to protect the Libyan people and prevent further loss of life. As Vice President Biden recently stated when a government commits atrocities against its own people it forfeits its sovereignty.  Libyas acts of aggression against civilians seeking the right to determine their own destiny demonstrate a clear disregard for fundamental human rights and Libyas leader Muammar Qaddafi and others involved in these attacks must be held accountable for their actions. As I have emphasized the United States cannot afford to engage in another military conflict without the support of our international partners.  The active participation of many nations in this effort is encouraging and reflects a broad commitment by the international community to help the Libyan people. While I support the Presidents decision to use force in Libya the Administration must work closely with Congress in the days and weeks ahead.
