And from all of us at Texas Insider best wishes for a grateful & Happy Veterans Day.
Some gave all. Some came home with haunting memories of those who paid the ultimate price for our freedoms. But this veterans day let us all stop what we are doing and honor those who have so honored us. As the son of a Korean War Veteran and the brother of an Iraqi War Veteran I know that our Veterans deserve nothing less than the best thank you their country can provide. I recently had the honor to get to know two amazing heroes Sgt. Eddie Wright of Willis and Billy Trero of Trinity. Sgt. Wright lost much of both of his arms and suffered a devastating leg injury when a rocket propelled grenade struck his unit in Iraq but he still managed to help get his unit to safety. After extensive medical treatment Sgt. Wright went on to become an instructor in hand to hand combat. Today he and his beautiful bride live in a specially equipped home provided by an amazing volunteer organization Helping A Hero; and yet he says he is so blessed to live in a country and to have fought for these freedoms. I met WWII veteran Billy Trero when his daughters came up to me in the wee hours of a Saturday morning at a Target parking lot in Conroe. Hundreds in the community were there to send off an honor flight of WWII veterans who were going to Washington to see the memorial built in their honor. Mr. Treros daughters come up to me and said I just had to meet their dad because he was a hero. Now thats the true definition of understatement. Turns out Billy Trero was the youngest marine to serve in WWII.
- He enlisted at age 13.
- He fought and was wounded at age 14 in Guadalcanal.
- He fought two more battles and was seriously injured in Saipan
- Served 8 months in a hospital and was discharged two weeks shy of his 17th birthday
- Yet he doesnt consider himself a hero but his family & all who meet this amazing man know better.
