Community Collaboration Leads to Preventive Health Screenings for Houstonians
Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN Texas (Houston TX) Congressman Gene Green invites residents of the 29th Congressional District of Texas to a Community Health & Wellness Fair on Friday May 27 at the Denver Harbor Multi-Service Center.
During this health & wellness fair healthcare professionals will screen and/or test attendees for: blood glucose blood pressure dental vision cholesterol mammograms lead prevention chronic kidney disease and body mass index (BMI). Additionally 18-40 year old Hispanic women will have the opportunity to participate in a six-month diabetes intervention program.
All services will be free to attendees.
- Currently one in 12 adult Texans roughly 2 million people have been diagnosed with diabetes; another half million are believed to be undiagnosed. That number is likely to grow to nearly 8 million by 2040 according to Responding to the Epidemic: Strategies for Improving Diabetes Care In Texas http://bit.ly/1TYyNXq.
- Studies have found that more than quarter of Americans have pre-diabetic risk factors but only 1 in 6 of those know that they do. With medication and lifestyle changes people with these risk factors can avoid type 2 diabetes.
- Undiagnosed diabetes puts people at greater risk of serious complications like kidney eye and nerve damage and can even be fatal.
Thats why early detection and prevention efforts like this Fair are critically important in combating diabetes and other conditions.
Our goal is to offer neighbors access to healthcare professionals and providers so that families can assess their health and wellness. Weve seen that efforts to prevent health issues like diabetes can positively impact a families economic physical and mental wellbeing. Experts and representatives with over 25 social service providers will be available until 1:00 P.M.
Those interested in attending can expect the following:
- Screening & Testing Providers will screen/test for: blood glucose blood pressure dental vision cholesterol mammograms lead prevention chronic kidney disease and body mass index (BMI).
- Diabetes Prevention The Ohio State Universitys Wexner Medical Center will enroll those who qualify for their Diabetes Prevention & Intervention Program for Young Hispanic Women with Prediabetes.
This event is being held in partnership with the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.
