Cornyn Addresses Texas Challenge to Obama Immigration Actions

cornyn-speaks3Americas always been made better by people who have risked coming to the United States because they werent satisfied with what they had where they lived. But the day we begin rewarding people who do this in disregard of the law is the day we begin no longer to be a nation of laws and that is a legacy and a treasure that we should not squander. Texas Insider Report: WASHINGTON DC  Following oral arguments before the United States Supreme Court today U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) spoke on the Senate floor in support of the State of Texas challenge to the Presidents executive actions on immigration.Senator Cornyn and 42 other Senate Republicans filed an amicus brief with the Court earlier this month in support of the states challenge to the Obama Administrations November 2014 executive actions. Excerpts of his remarks are below and video can be found here.
This is really more than just about immigration. This is whether under the doctrine of separation of powers under the Constitution that weve lived under for these many years gives the President unilateral authority without the approval of Congress the elected representatives of the people and in flagrant disregard for the laws that are already on the books." So it is not just about immigration. It is about the Constitution itself." This executive order is Exhibit One because he said I dont care what the voters think. I dont care what the American people think. I dont care what the Constitution says. I dont care what Congress says should be the law of the land. Im going to do it the way I want to do it. And frankly that is scary stuff when youre talking about the Commander-in-Chief the leader of the free world and the sort of power that goes along with that." We need to know whether we remain a nation of laws as well as a nation of immigrants. The whole idea that our Democratic colleagues have foisted on us that somehow we have to choose between those two is a false choice. Its a false choice. We are both. We arent one or the other. Americas always been made better by people who have risked coming to the United States because they werent satisfied with what they had where they lived. But the day we begin rewarding people who do this in disregard of the law is the day we begin no longer to be a nation of laws and that is a legacy and a treasure that we should not squander."
