Texas Insider Report: WASHINGTON D.C. U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) issued the following statement after the official announcement Friday that the U.S. Army would award the qualifying victims of the 2009 Fort Hood massacre with Purple Hearts:
Since the days following the attack in 2009 the victims their families the Fort Hood community and so many of us have recognized that fateful day for what it was: an act of terrorism against our country and against our men and women in uniform.
At long last the Pentagon will formally recognize that fact as well and bestow the appropriate military honors and benefits on the victims who so rightly deserve them. We can never repay what was lost that day but todays news brings long-awaited justice to the victims especially those men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice on November 5 2009. May those we lost rest in peace and may God bless those still recovering and grieving.
Senator Cornyn last year successfully led a push in Congress to update federal law to make Fort Hood victims eligible for the Purple Heart a cause he has championed since 2009.
