Cornyn Meets with Texas Hispanic Chambers of Commerce

Discusses Small Business Issues And Policy Concerns With Texas Affiliates cornyn-hccusWASHINGTON U.S. Senator John Cornyn R-Texas today hosted a meeting with representatives  from the Texas Hispanic Chambers of Commerce from McAllen Dallas San Antonio and El Paso to discuss several issues affecting Hispanic small business owners. As the number-one job creator in the country small businesses are the main vehicle that will drive us out of this recession. Hispanic business leaders in Texas play an integral role in that recovery and we need to focus on implementing policies that allow them to do what they do best; create jobs" said Sen. Cornyn.  Im always interested in exploring ways to encourage economic growth in Texas. Hispanic small businesses are an important part of that dialogue on this issue" Sen. Cornyn and the Texas Hispanic Chamber representatives discussed several important issues including the economy health care education and small business.  President Obama made a commitment to jumpstart the economy and create new jobs but missed many opportunities by promoting policies such as cap-and-trade. Cap-and-trade penalizes many small businesses and creates uncertainty that stifles job creation.  The new health care plan imposes higher payroll taxes on small businesses and imposes punitive taxes on businesses that cannot afford coverage for their workers. Sen. Cornyn shared the concerns of the Hispanic businesses leaders with Washingtons role in rebuilding the economy and developing policies which make it easier for businesses to hire legally and retain highly-skilled workers. He explained that a temporary worker program would give employers the access to labor when they need it and help reverse the current economic downturn. There is a real need for highly-skilled workers in Texas" said Javier Palomarez President and CEO of the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC). The Hispanic business community needs leadership on this issue." The meeting with the Texas Hispanic Chambers of Commerce coincided with the USHCCs 20th Annual Legislative Summit in Washington D.C. from March 22 to 24 which provides Hispanic Chamber members from around the U.S. with opportunities to speak with key administration officials and legislators.  The USHCC represents the interests of nearly 3 million Hispanic-owned businesses in the U.S. that generate $400 billion annually. The national organization also serves as the umbrella organization for more than 200 local Hispanic chambers in the U.S. and Puerto Rico.
