Prosecutor safety should start with enabling them to defend themselves
Texas Insider Report: WASHINGTON D.C. In the wake of the murders of two Texas state prosecutors U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and Director of the Administrative Office of the Courts Judge Thomas Hogan seeking clarification on DOJ and Federal Court policies that prevent prosecutors from carrying firearms.
I am concerned for the safety of other prosecutors at both the federal and state levels. These public servants carry out vital and dangerous duties that often target violent and organized criminal networks.
I am told that as a matter of policy federal prosecutors are barred from carrying personal self-defense firearms to their offices (and parking facilities) even if they hold a state-issued concealed carry license.
If this information is accurate and is a matter of federal court policy then the safety and security of federal officials demands the policys immediate reconsideration. Prosecutor safety should start with enabling them to defend themselves from violent attack."
Senator Cornyn serves on the Finance and Judiciary Committees. He serves as the top Republican on the Judiciary Committees Immigration Refugees and Border Security subcommittee. He served previously as Texas Attorney General Texas Supreme Court Justice and Bexar County District Judge.
