Votes Against Record Tax Hike & Spending in Democrats’ FY 2009 Budget

width=65WASHINGTON—U.S. Sen. John Cornyn a member of the Senate Budget Committee made the following statement today regarding the House-Senate conference report to the Democrats’ FY 2009 Budget Resolution -- the centerpiece of which is a $1.2 trillion tax hike on 43 million American families the largest tax hike proposal in U.S. history:

“At a time when working families are dealing with rising gas prices and high health care costs it is stunning that the Democratic majority would pass a budget that provides for the largest tax hike in U.S. history.

“Instead of reining in wasteful spending and addressing the looming entitlement crisis this budget dramatically grows the size of the federal government and passes the buck to our children.  It reflects a tax-and-spend mentality that is dangerous to our economy and bad for families in Texas and across the country.

“The American people have made clear that they are sick of politics as usual in Washington.  They believe Washington is broken and needs to be fixed.  Yet this budget makes clear that some in Congress still refuse to listen.

“We need a budget that is fiscally-responsible protects families and sets our country on a path to a more secure economic future.  Unfortunately this proposal is the exact opposite.  It will hurt Texas families and I will not support it.”
