Texas Insider Report: WASHINGTON D.C. This is just the latest intrusion here in individual religious liberty that represents what we believe is an unacceptable growth in the size and scope of the federal government most clearly evidenced by the Presidents health care bill the so-called Affordable Care Act which limits the liberties & choices Americans get to make in their lives " said U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX).
Tuesday regarding the Obama Administrations mandate that faith-based employers provide healthcare coverage for certain services they could find objectionable and immoral based on their beliefs:
I hope the Administration will back down from this rule that violates conscience. If it does not I can guarantee you that we will do everything within our power to repeal it" Cornyn said.
Sen. Cornyn addressed the issue at a Senate Republican Leadership
press conference earlier today.
He is a cosponsor of the
Respect for Rights of Conscience Act of 2011 and the
Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 2012 both of which would provide protections for individuals and organizations who because of their religious beliefs are opposed to certain government mandates included in Obamacare.
Specifically both bills would insert a conscience clause into the
Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act that would ensure these faith-based organizations are not required to offer their employees private insurance that includes coverage for birth control sterilizations and abortifacients if this is contrary to the organizations religious beliefs.
Senator Cornyn serves on the Finance Judiciary Armed Services and Budget Committees. He serves as the top Republican on the Judiciary Committees Immigration Refugees and Border Security subcommittee. He served previously as Texas Attorney General Texas Supreme Court Justice and Bexar County District Judge.
