CPG to Host US Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) Thursday at 5 PM

The Center for Politics and Governance will host United States Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) Thursday at 5 PM in the LBJ Student Lounge.  Former Texas Lieutenant Governor Ben Barnes will also be in attendance.

Senator Harkin is an uncommitted Super Delegate to this year’s Democratic National Convention and will be speaking on politics policy and the race for the White House.

More on Senator Tom Harkin:

Harkin was born November 19 1939 in Cumming Iowa. He graduated from Iowa State University in 1962 and received his J.D. degree from Catholic University of America Law School in 1972. He served in the United States Navy from 1962-1967.  Harkin was an attorney before being elected to the U. S. House of Representatives in 1974 where he served until 1985. In 1984 Harkin was elected to the United States Senate from Iowa and was reelected in 1990 1996 and 2002.

During his career Tom Harkin has sponsored many major pieces of legislation including The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and has been a major contributor to the 2008 Farm Bill.  Senator Harkin is at this time an uncommitted super delegate.  He ran for President in 1992 winning the Iowa Caucuses but losing the nomination for then Governor Bill Clinton.
