Debt Ceiling Debate Heats up in Washington

From U.S. Representative Canseco width=71Texas Insider Report: WASHINGTON D.C. Summer isnt the only thing heating up across the 23rd District of Texas and the rest of the nation. Discussions between President Obama and congressional leaders on legislation to cut federal spending and also raise the level of debt our nation can take on have recently become very heated as we get approach August 2nd which is the date Treasury Secretary Geithner says the United States will no longer be able to borrow money necessary to cover our spending. This deadline is casting an ominous shadow not only over Washington DC but over the entire nation and our economy as the negotiations continue without positive results. As I have said before I will not vote to raise the amount of debt our nation can take on. Our nation has a spending problem not a revenue problem. Simply put we are in a spending-driven debt crisis and the solution lies in cutting spending. Thats why I find it so outrageous that President Obama and other Washington liberals believe the solution lies in raising taxes. I do not believe raising taxes is ever a solution but especially not at a time when over 14 million Americans are unemployed and weve had 29 straight months with the unemployment rate at 8 or higher. We cannot continue to spend money we dont have or we will be the first generation in American history to leave the next generation with less freedom and less opportunity. American taxpayers already carry a massive debt as every American household is responsible for just over $120000 for the debt we already have. As Ive traveled across the 23rd District the people I meet dont tell me that they dont pay enough in taxes; however they do tell me that they feel the federal government spends too much. Texans are tired of the uncertainty in the economy occurring as a result of policies created in Washington like the government take-over of health care and out-of-control federal spending that are putting government in the way of greater economic recovery and job growth. The people of the 23rd District of Texas sent me to Congress to end the out-of-control government spending and eliminate burdensome regulations that are impeding job growth. It is time we cut up the national credit card and force government to live within its means just like families and small businesses do every day in Texas.
