Readings from the Texas Declaration of Independence
Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN Texas Today the Texas Senate marked the 175th Texas Independence Day with readings from the Texas Declaration of Independence. Lt. Governor David Dewhurst opened todays session with the following statement:
One hundred & seventy-five years ago today on March 2 1836 a free and independent Republic of Texas was officially declared when the Texas Declaration of Independence was issued by the Convention of 1836 at Washington-on-the-Brazos.
In observance of the 175th anniversary the original Declaration of Independence will be on display in the Lorenzo de Zavala State Archives and Library Building through April 21 − San Jacinto Day. Today however we have the privilege of having that original document here in the Senate Chamber as we celebrate this special day in Texas history said Dewhurst.
As the Alamo lay under siege defended by brave Texans under the command of William B.

Travis & James Bowie the Convention of 1836 went about its historic business. Seven weeks later one of the signers − Sam Houston − would lead the Texans to victory at the Battle of San Jacinto.
In celebration of the 175th anniversary of Texas independence we will read the words penned by those brave men who without regard for personal danger but with a fervent desire for freedom from tyranny shaped the destiny of Texas.
