Congressman Michael McCaul
TexasInsider Report: AUSTIN Texas I am disappointed that Democrats on the select committee have balked at proposals made by Republicans to reform entitlements - a genuine attempt to make the most significant systemic change to the long term use of taxpayer dollars. Washington does not have a revenue problem. It has a spending problem. Unfortunately Democrats continue to counter legitimate cuts with tax increases which only serve to penalize families and businesses and protect the status quo of unsustainable budgets.
Congress must fulfill its responsibility to cut a minimum of $1.2 trillion and I believe it is incumbent upon us to come to an agreement on the sensible downsizing of government.
BALANCED BUDGET AMENDMENT
Last week our nations debt burden topped $15 trillion. I am greatly disappointed that on Friday the House failed to take a historic step of passing a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution that would have reversed this dangerous course and put an end to fiscal insanity.
It is astonishing that so many members fail to see the seriousness of Americas fiscal crisis. No matter how much we cut we need a long-term commitment to keep spending in check.
A balanced budget amendment draws a line we cannot cross. If we continue on our present path we will guarantee that future generations will have unsustainable tax burdens monstrous inefficient bureaucracies and a lifestyle so diminished that it will no longer resemble the America we all know and love. That is not what our founding fathers had in mind when they formed this great nation.
Every family must balance their budget. Forty-nine states must balance theirs.
It is finally time for Washington to do the same.

ASTRONAUTS HONORED
I was proud to attend a Congressional Medial Ceremony honoring the first man to orbit the moon and the crew of the first moon landing mission.
The Congressional Gold Medal awarded to Senator John Glenn Neil Armstrong Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin is the highest civilian acknowledgement Congress can award.
Few could have foreseen how much our nation and the world has benefited from their historic missions four decades later. As a member of the Science Space and Technology Committee I will continue working to build on Americas commitment to human space exploration.
