Dukes Honored For Protecting Capitol View Corridors

AUSTIN -- State Representative Dawnna Dukes (D-Austin) was recently honored with the “Merit Award” from The Heritage Society of Austin for her extensive efforts to protect the Capitol View Corridors which included Dukes single-handedly securing 143 signatures (out of a possible 150) of Texas House members on a letter to the City of Austin.

"Capitol View Corridors are not just important to my district or the City of Austin" stated Representative Dukes.  “These treasured views belong to every family in Texas.  I am honored to receive this award.”
The 30 Capitol View Corridors have been in place for the past quarter century but have been repeatedly threatened from numerous fronts over the last several years.

In regards to this issue The Heritage Society of Austin said “A number of issues have commanded the attention of preservationists this year but none have been as consuming and important…”.

"While we won this battle I feel certain there will be many more" said Representative Dukes.  “We must remain vigilant in protecting the Capitol View Corridors to protect this intangible asset in perpetuity.”

Dawnna Dukes is Travis County’s only African-American legislator.  Since first joining the Texas House of Representatives in 1995 Dukes has worked to open state contracting to minority-owned firms improve East Side schools protect children and the elderly and make health care more affordable.
