Texas Insider Report: MESQUITE Texas Texas Comptroller Susan Combs paid a visit to Eastfield College today to present college officials a $147098 state JET (Jobs & Education for Texans) grant to help train students for jobs in the growing wind energy industry.
Eastfield Colleges Alternative & Sustainable Energy training program is helping meet the need in Texas for workers with technical skills to work in this new and rapidly growing sector of the energy industry" Combs said.
The grant money along with matching funds from the college will help pay for a recently installed 50-foot 3.5 kw wind turbine on the Eastfield campus and other cutting-edge technology that will provide hands-on training for students.
Without the JET grant I do not believe Eastfield College in these troubled financial times could afford to equip a renewable energy program" said Dr. Chuck Dale Chairman of Electronics and Electronic Systems Technology.
Texas faces a growing shortage of skilled workers to fill technical positions in engineering science precision production mechanical health care and other industries. In 2009 the Texas Legislature created the JET program to help meet this demand and ensure a strong future for Texas.
In the last two years $10 million in grants to fund training equipment have been awarded to 39 college districts three state colleges and two public technical colleges. Annually an estimated 8288 students will be served by JET-funded equipment.
