
(Washington D.C.) U.S. Representative Chet Edwards was honored by Acting Secretary of the Navy B.J. Penn on Friday with the Navy Distinguished Public Service Award the highest civilian award bestowed by the Department of the Navy.
Those receiving the award have demonstrated outstanding service of substantial and long term benefit to the Navy Marine Corps or to the Department of the Navy as a whole. This comes as a direct result of the support Congressman Edwards provided to Americas sailors and marines through his leadership as Chairman of the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Subcommittee.
Edwards has led efforts to revolutionize military family housing through public-private partnerships invest in new child care centers to support military families while sailors and marines are deployed and most recently secured $2.3 billion for new military medical facilities including new Marine Corps hospitals at Camp Lejeune and Camp Pendleton.
I am humbled and honored by this award" said Edwards but we know the real heroes are the ones wearing the uniform. It is a privilege to work for those men and women of the Navy and Marine Corps who sacrifice daily in service to our country. I look forward to continuing the support for both them and their families as we address the needs and concerns of thousands of veterans returning home every year."
My father was a Naval aviator during World War II" Edwards continued. I know he is looking down with pride right now."
Donald Winter Former Secretary of the Navy selected Congressman Edwards for the Award but was unable to award it before he left office. Congressman Edwards selfless devotion to the Nations Sailors and Marines ensured they were provided the resources necessary to effectively conduct the Global War on Terrorism" said the Secretary of the Navy.
His courageous leadership vision and loyalty to the men and women of the Department of the Navy greatly contributed to their quality of life and helped create the most modern and highly trained fighting force in history."
Former recipients of the award include freelance news photographer Chris Jackson who received the award for rescuing a Marine from a burning vehicle in Afghanistan in August 2008 and Joe Rosenthal the Pulitzer Prize winning photographer who is known for his photo Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima.
