Unless our community supports President Obama now reform will not happen in our lifetimes. Over the last decade Texas leaders have failed our state. Governor Rick Perry and U.S. Senators Kay Bailey Hutchinson and John Cornyn have all had a decade to fix Texas broken health care system.
During the last ten years Perrys approach has been to kick over 230000 kids out of the Childrens Health Insurance Program 500000 out of Medicaid call it victory then vacation with Grover Norquist. During his tenure as governor health insurance premiums have increased 91.6 percent.
In the state with the highest percentage of uninsured in the U.S. Cornyn brags we have created greater access to quality health care in Texas so you have to understand what I mean when I say I want to make Washington D.C. and the rest of our country more like Texas because frankly we know the policies that actually work. Hutchinson chooses to fawn over donors whose taxes might be raised with meaningless late hour amendments to bills long overdue and ignores written requests to pass a health agenda.

Twelve years. Eight years. Thats how long 39-year old Ricky Broussard and 19-year old Joel Johnson waited to receive independent living services and community living assistance and support services from the state.
Its ten years and counting for Juliana Aguilar a 15-year old who waits to receive short-term care services like assistance with bathing dressing and transportation to and from doctors visits. Although she qualifies for these state services her parents continue to struggle by working four jobs between the two of them to cover their familys household expenses and doctors billsthats their reality.
Texas refuses federal school funds
Jenny LaCoste-Caputo San Antonio Express-News
Gov. Rick Perry announced Wednesday that Texas will not compete in the U.S. Department of Educations much-touted Race to the Top program leaving as much as $700 million on the table that couldve been spent in Texas classrooms.
Perry made the announcement Wednesday in Houston with Commissioner of Education Robert Scott at his side. Both have been critical of the program which pushes states to adopt education reform principles that are likely to be the cornerstone for the reauthorization of the No Child Left Behind Act in exchange for $4 billion in federal funding.
Several San Antonio school leaders were disappointed with the news saying state leaders shouldnt turn their backs on federal money with the budget shortages Texas school districts are facing.

Face of food stamps changing in Texas
For years Lori Downs lived by the values her father taught her self-reliance independence. A 29-year-old Clear Lake mother of two small children Downs had worked full-time since she was 18 years old. She was the main breadwinner in her household and took pride in her work ethic earning two promotions in six months at her most recent job.
But on Tuesday the former accounting clerk sat in a long line at the Texas Department of Health and Human Services office on Fuqua tears welling in her eyes as she waited to talk to someone about how to get food stamps for the first time in her life.
The tears were not for herself she said but for her 3-year-old daughter and 18-month-old son.

County Clerk Dianne Florez noticed it first. Plumes of smoke were rising outside the small West Texas town of Pecos. The prison is burning again" she announced.
About a month and a half before on December 12 2008 inmates had rioted to protest the death of one of their own Jesus Manuel Galindo 32. When Galindos body was removed from the prison in what looked to them like a large black trash bag they set fire to the recreational center and occupied the exercise yard overnight.
Using smuggled cell phones they told worried family members and the media about poor medical care in the prison and described the treatment of Galindo who had been in solitary confinement since mid-November. During that time fellow inmates and his mother who called the prison nearly every day had warned authorities that Galindo needed daily medication for epilepsy and was suffering from severe seizures in the security housing unit" which the inmates call the hole."

On March 3 1986 four of Chinas top weapons scientistseach a veteran of the missile and space programssent a private letter to Deng Xiaoping the leader of the country. Their letter was a warning: Decades of relentless focus on militarization had crippled the countrys civilian scientific establishment; China must join the worlds xin jishu geming the new technological revolution" they said or it would be left behind. They called for an lite project devoted to technology ranging from biotech to space research. Deng agreed and scribbled on the letter Action must be taken on this now." This was Chinas Sputnik moment" and the project was code-named the 863 Program for the year and month of its birth.
In the years that followed the government pumped billions of dollars into labs and universities and enterprises on projects ranging from cloning to underwater robots. Then in 2001 Chinese officials abruptly expanded one program in particular: energy technology. The reasons were clear. Once the largest oil exporter in East Asia China was now adding more than two thousand cars a day and importing millions of barrels; its energy security hinged on a flotilla of tankers stretched across distant seas.
Meanwhile China was getting nearly eighty per cent of its electricity from coal which was rendering the air in much of the country unbreathable and hastening climate changes that could undermine Chinas future stability. Rising sea levels were on pace to create more refugees in China than in any other country even Bangladesh.
