Fighting to Preserve Individual Freedoms Prevent Government Overreach

From Congressman Canseco width=72Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN Texas The Battle of San Jacinto on April 21 1836 was a pivotal moment in the Texas Revolution and ensured that Texas gained its independence.  As we celebrated the 176th Anniversary of the battle this past week we were reminded of what was fought for during the Battle of San Jacinto and the Texas Revolution:  individual freedoms and independence from the tyranny of government. Texans believe today as they did then in a fighting spirit and an unwillingness to compromise their personal freedoms to either foreign or domestic governments.  It is our freedom as a people that sets us apart from other nations and I believe is the result of American exceptionalism.  In order to protect such important freedoms we must continue to ensure that the government does not overextend its reach. The government should be answerable to the people that elect it.  Unfortunately weve seen over many years the federal government continuing to grow in size and scope while the freedom of individuals has yielded.  As the representative of the 23rd District of Texas I am working diligently to make certain that we rein in the federal government and make sure that it remains accountable to the sovereign power in our nation: the people of the United States.  That is why Ive cosponsored the Regulations From the Executive in Need of Scrutiny Act (H.R. 10).  This legislation which was passed by the House of Representatives on December 7th would reform the Congressional Review Act of 1996 and require Congress to affirmatively approve any major rules issued by federal agencies before they would go into effect.  This reform is badly needed as under the Congressional Review Act as currently structured rules issued by federal agencies go into effect unless Congress uses its authority to block them which has happened exactly once in the fifteen years since its passage.  During the same time federal agencies issued almost 60000 rules with over 1000 of them being major rules.  Unfortunately this legislation like so many other pieces of legislation passed by the House to cut spending protect the freedoms of Americans and generally rein in the size and scope of the federal government continues to go untouched by the United States Senate under the leadership of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV).    While our country is the midst of challenging times we must not forget what was fought for during the Battle of San Jacinto and the courage shown by those in battle.  We must continue to fight to preserve our right to personal liberties and freedom from government interference. The road ahead will be challenging for Texas and the country but I have no doubt that the same ideals and spirit that won the Battle of San Jacinto will propel us forward into a bright future for generations to come.  A former small business owner and lifelong Texan Representative Canseco proudly represents the 23rd District of Texas.
