Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN Texas Next week local law enforcement officers along with case workers and
investigators from Child Protective Services (CPS) will come together to attend a three-day training designed to improve law enforcements response to
incidents of child abuse neglect and exploitation.
Recent allegations made public through the media of child abuse and homicide such as the incidents involving an NFL player from Montgomery County and the death of 2-year-old Colton Turner from Cedar Park validate the importance of adequate affordable and current training for law enforcement and CPS in order to help them respond to and investigate reports of child abuse.

Officers receive basic child abuse training in the academy; however there is no requirement that they receive any additional training." said Katie Alexander a law enforcement officer who is the Program Instructor for the Advanced Child Abuse Investigation Training Program.
Our training covers more advanced topics which includes in-depth investigation techniques" Alexander stated. One component of the training is how to work more effectively within a multidisciplinary team. While the training is primarily geared towards law enforcement officers CPS is invited to attend not only to cross-train but to strengthen the relationship between the agencies.
The Advanced Child Abuse Investigation Training is supported by the Childrens Justice Act through the Texas Center for Judiciary. This training program is administered by TMPA with input from a statewide curriculum committee comprised of representatives from law enforcement child protective services childrens advocacy centers and victim services. The program utilizes a network of certified instructors to deliver this free training on a local basis thus enabling more officers to take part.
According to Alexander it is imperative for law enforcement and CPS to be educated on the dynamics of child abuse and recognize the value of the services that are available in their community to assist them in their investigations." The Advanced Child Abuse Investigation Training provides officers investigators case workers and social workers with the education needed to better serve children in their community.
Our hope is that those who attend this training learn to integrate their strengths and feel more comfortable assisting each other with future investigations" said Alexander.
