Getting Behind Romney

Campaign should relentlessly attack President on his lies about transparency

width=175By Jim Lyde

Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN Texas We see story after story about Mitt Romney being unable to generate enthusiasm for his candidacy from conservatives in the Republican Party.  Why?  Lets take a look.   There is a history of presidential races that Romney needs to read.  In 1980 Reagan won in a landslide.  In 1988 George H. W. Bush turned a substantial deficit to into an 8 point Labor Day lead and won going away.  Both won by pounding their opponents with conservative principles and especially how their opponents did not have any.  The second term of Bush the Elder was characterized by movement away from this strategy and he was a one-term president. The political strategy that from 1968 to 1988 produced five GOP victories in six presidential elections and two 49-state landslides was abandoned in favor of a more moderate approach. It seems clear that if Republicans run as moderates and Democrats have a candidate who is this side of repulsive Democrats win. In 2008 Senator McCain continued the avoidance of cultural and social issues showed misplaced deference to his opponent and got beat. The bottom line is this: one doesnt get respect by watering width=180down ones beliefs. Liberals will never vote for conservatives. One gets respect by being respectable in the view of conservative supporters.  Otherwise conservatives stay home.  For examples look at Bush the Elder Bob Dole and John McCain.  Mitt Romney is continuing this failed exercise. Amazingly he could prevail even without a winning strategy because Americans are seeing the weaknesses and dishonesty of the incumbent. However it is dangerous and unnecessary to depend on this situation for victory. What can Governor Romney do to heat up his supporters?  Lets be clear: it is the Romney Campaign not Governor Romney personally that is being addressed:
  1. Embolden the campaign (the first choice here was grow a set).  McCain had a glorious opportunity when Obama attacked Sarah Palins credentials. The governor had more executive experience in one week as a small town mayor than Obama had in his entire life and she wasnt even running for president. McCain should have unleashed the tigress. Instead he caged her. Romney should learn from this losing demeanor and relentlessly attack the President on his lack of published credentials and his lies about transparency. If Romney gets in the face of the width=206President with enough vigor even the liberal press will cover it. Obama changes his tune when he gets to the second verse! His apparent disdain for the rule of law is just begging to be discussed. What (else) is he hiding with the Fast & Furious debacle? He publicly chastises a trapped Supreme Court and later presumes to dictate their decision in the press. He makes illegal appointments. He selectively enforces federal law and sues any state that tries to do something about it. Even so he has the nerve to lecture you about principles. Get after it!
  2. The issue is Church & State Stupid! Continue to hammer away at the ridiculous assertion that the issue is contraceptives instead of forcing a church to violate its beliefs. To give credit where due the liberals did well when they deftly changed the subject.  Now we are not even talking about government sponsored abortions.
  3. Stop letting Obama off the hook (is healthcare a tax a penalty or what?).  Another glorious opportunity squandered because the Romney campaign was caught up trying to defend Romneycare. Announce once and for all that regardless of non-issue Romneycare when elected President Romney is going to repeal Obamacare period.  Say that every time the question comes up.
  4. Lose the image of being the Darling of Wall Street. The party line is that the government needs to relax regulations on financial institutions.  My goodness those folks have historically gone out of their way to prove the folly of that position! That position cannot withstand the application of common sense! Banks and Wall Streeters supported by their government co-conspirators who are dishonest and intentionally defraud their own customers need to be width=66curtailed if not prosecuted. Acknowledge that and promise to do something about it and the campaign will take off. The next publication of The Liberty Cell will be devoted in part to this issue.
We think that doing those things would help. Thanks for your time. Jim Lyde is Chief Operating Officer of The Liberty Cell.
