Gov. Perry Appoints Cabrales as General Counsel

AUSTIN – Gov. Rick Perry appointed David G. Cabrales of Dallas as general counsel to replace Brian Newby recently tapped to serve as the governor’s chief of staff.

Cabrales is an attorney and equity member of Locke Liddell and Sapp P.L.L.C. where he serves as chairman of the diversity committee. His practice focuses on insurance disputes securities actions and business torts. He formerly served as a judicial clerk in the Texas Supreme Court for Raul A. Gonzalez.
Cabrales will step down from his current position on the Texas Racing Commission and is a past member of the Texas Board of Occupational Therapy Examiners. He is a member of the Dallas Hispanic Bar Association and the State Bar of Texas where he serves on the steering committee of the Texas Minority Counsel Program.
Cabrales is also a member of the Dallas Bar Association and past chairman of the Securities Law Section. Additionally he volunteers as a member of the Salesmanship Club of Dallas and serves as a board member of the United Way of Metropolitan Dallas Inc.

He received a bachelor’s degree from Texas Tech University and a law degree from Southern Methodist University School of Law where he attended as a Hatton W. Sumners Scholar. He is married to Ivonne Martinez Cabrales and they have four children – Emma 7; Atticus 6; Sarah 2; and Tessa 2 months.

His appointment is effective September 4 2007.
