AUSTIN – Gov. Rick Perry has appointed seven members to the State Independent Living Council. The council leads promotes and advances an independent living philosophy and advocates for the rights of individuals with disabilities.
Dennis Borel of Austin is executive director of the Coalition of Texans with Disabilities. He is a member of the Disability Policy Consortium and Austin Men’s Soccer Association and a Boy Scout Troop leader.
Borel received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan where he also received the 2006 James Neubacher Award which recognizes outstanding achievement in creating opportunities for people with disabilities. He is reappointed for a term to expire Oct. 24 2009.
Gloria N. Greeder of El Paso is a bookkeeper at Mountain Vista Builders Inc. She is a past member of the Volar Center for Independent Living Board of Directors. She is also past treasurer of the Loma Terrace Elementary Parent Teacher Organization. Greeder received an associate’s degree from Southwest Institute. She replaces Marcia Ingram of McAllen for a term to expire Oct. 24 2011.
Saul Herrera of Midland is RSVP Project Director for the Community & Senior Services of Midland. He is a member of the ABLE Center for Independent Living Board of Directors 2-1-1 Texas Advisory Board and Casa de Amigos Senior Advisory Board. He is also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #9215 of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church Permian Basin Regional Citizens Corp Council and Texas Senior Corp Evaluation Committee and is chair of the Midland Area H-E-B Feast of Sharing. He volunteers as an adult tutor with Midland Need to Read and as a mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters. Herrera received a bachelor’s degree from Texas Tech University. He replaces Morgan Talbot of McAllen for a term to expire Oct. 24 2010.
Donald L. Landry of Groves is the deafness resource specialist at Communication Access Ability Group. He is the past treasurer of the Southeast Texas Association for the Deaf and a member of the Deep East Texas Association for the Deaf. He is also a member of the Angelina Community College Advisory Board. Landry is reappointed for a term to expire Oct. 24 2010.
Randell Resneder of Lubbock is an adjunct faculty at the University of North Texas. He is founder and executive director of Handicapped Awareness Programs in Lubbock. He is also a past member of the Texas Council for Exceptional Children Nominating Committee. Resneder received a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Texas and a master’s degree in instructional technology from Texas Tech University. He replaces Sue Ford of Bedford for a term to expire Oct. 24 2009.
Scotty Sherrill of Nacogdoches is former executive director of the Nacogdoches Treatment Center. She is a member of the Nacogdoches Mayor’s Committee for People with Disabilities and Nacogdoches County Aging Committee. Sherrill received a bachelor’s degree from Harding University. She is reappointed for a term to expire Oct. 24 2010.
Karen Swearingen of Rowlett is a health science teacher in the Garland Independent School District adjunct faculty at El Centro College and a registered nurse. She volunteers as a builder with Amor Ministries. Swearingen received a bachelor’s degree from Baylor University. She replaces Robert Hawkins of Waco for a term to expire Oct. 24 2010.
