AUSTIN – Gov. Rick Perry today celebrated the grand opening of Advanced Micro Devices’ Lone Star Campus in southwest Austin. AMD employs close to 2500 people in the Austin area and relocated its offices to be closer to its employee base. Gov. Perry also presented an Honorary Texan certificate to Craig Garcia AMD’s director of global corporate services who oversaw the building project from site selection to design and construction.
“Our state’s status in the global economy is built on the success of companies like AMD” said Gov. Perry. “As a leading technology company and valuable corporate citizen AMD demonstrates how a global Fortune 500 company can grow and prosper in our tech-friendly state. AMD’s longevity is testimony to its culture vision and most of all its people.”
Operating in Austin since 1979 AMD is a leading global provider of innovative processing solutions in the computing graphics and consumer electronics markets. The new building’s design showcases AMD’s commitment to environmentally-conscious development and serves as a model for responsible corporate growth. The campus’ internationally-recognized design team developed an intensive plan to limit environmental impact protect water quality and implement innovative sustainable design.
“Three years ago we announced our plan to build a new campus closer to our employee base and made a promise to set a standard for responsible development” said Hector Ruiz AMD’s chairman and CEO. “Today as we officially open the doors of our new Lone Star campus I am proud to say that we have delivered on that promise through the extraordinary efforts and collaboration with local business government and environmental leaders.”
Texas is an integral part of the global semiconductor industry contributing to more than 11 percent of the world’s silicon processing capacity. As the third largest semiconductor company in Texas AMD contributes a large portion of the $33.7 billion in Texas electronic exports (2007) and provides more than $330 million in annual payroll and benefits to its Austin employees.
