ARLINGTON – Gov. Rick Perry today joined General Motors (GM) in unveiling the new Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid. The GM facility which has operated in Arlington for more than 50 years and produced more than eight million vehicles is the only plant in the country to produce Tahoe hybrids. The plant will roll out 1200 hybrids between November and December.
“The new Tahoe Hybrid smartly fuses the market’s movement toward renewable technology and drivers’ demands for relief at the pump” said Gov. Perry. “This new SUV helps consumers burn less gas and boosts Texas’ efforts to create a more diverse independent energy portfolio.”

In July Gov. Perry joined bioenergy leaders to roll out Texas’ Bioenergy Strategy which put forward a framework for the state to create a balanced energy portfolio through developments in bioenergy and other energy resources. Texas leads the nation in wind energy production and is second in solar energy generation. In the past year Texas also became the number one biodiesel-producing state in the nation increasing production capacity from 120 million gallons to 280 million gallons annually. Alternative fuels are a critical component of the governor’s energy strategy for Texas as are innovations in such areas as propulsion systems like GM’s 2-Mode Hybrid System.
The global push for renewable energy has sparked partnerships between the private sector academia and the state and federal government to research bioenergy and fuel opportunities in Texas. Today scientists have developed unique avenues through the use of natural materials to create environmentally clean and efficient energy sources.
“With Texas’ population on track to double in the next thirty years we need to make sure there is enough energy to light our homes power our businesses and keep us moving where we need to go” said Gov. Perry. “Innovative forward thinking will get us there.”
