AUSTIN Gov. Rick Perry yesterday received the American Medical Associations (AMA) Dr. Nathan Davis Award for Outstanding Government Service for his leadership in reforming Texas tort system.
Named for the founding father of the AMA the award recognizes elected and career officials in federal state or municipal service whose outstanding contributions have promoted the art and science of medicine and improved public health.
The story of healthcare is still being written but Texas has spearheaded a series of introductory chapters that have changed the tone and direction of the narrative" Gov. Perry said. We decided to tackle problems in the tort system head-on by instituting reforms that cooled off a climate of over-suing and made Texas friendlier to doctors and better for their patients."
In addition to tort reform the governor credited increased flexibility for small businesses to pool insurance costs and the creation of the Cancer Prevention Research Institute with changing the landscape of healthcare in Texas. The governor also credited incentives like the Texas Emerging Technology Fund with growing the states biotechnology industry and attracting top researchers and investments to universities in the state.
In the years to come I am committed to keeping Texas moving forward when it comes to the health and wellness of our citizens. I wont stop talking about the preventative impact of better fitness and the importance of lessening the burden on small businesses and pioneering new ideas that save lives" Gov. Perry said.
I accept this award on behalf of our leaders who have caught and shared that vision our healthcare providers who work faithfully in the midst of industry upheaval and future generations of Texans whose lives will be improved and even saved by their efforts."
