Gov. Perry Signs Senate Bill 629

width=65AUSTIN Gov. Rick Perry today signed Senate Bill (SB) 629 which makes college more accessible to Texans by allowing for the expansion of the Texas A&M University-Central Texas Texas A&M University-San Antonio and University of North Texas at Dallas campuses as stand-alone institutions. Both campuses have recently met the 1000 full time student enrollment benchmark set by the Legislature to qualify for stand-alone status. Texas is a state on the upswing. As our population continues to grow and we work to remain competitive in the global marketplace we need to make sure we have the higher education opportunities in place to groom the workforce of the next 50 years" Gov. Perry said. This bill acknowledges the rapid growth of our student population and accelerates these three schools ability to issue tuition revenue bonds and build the facilities they need." SB 629 also removes barriers to the use of tuition revenue bonds allowing the campuses to expand facilities to meet the needs of their growing student populations and making higher education more accessible to Texans across the state. The addition of A&M-Central Texas and A&M-San Antonio increases the number of independent universities in the A&M System to 11. The former system centers had been part of Tarleton State University and Texas A&M University-Kingsville respectively and the University of North Texas at Dallas was part of the University of North Texas at Denton. The schools may now begin to seek accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. This bill takes effect immediately.
