Workers at the Galveston County Emergency Operations Center today received a steak dinner courtesy of Oklahoma Gov. Brad Henry as part of a friendly wager between Gov. Perry and Gov. Henry over the outcome of the Red River Rivalry game between the University of Texas Longhorns and the University of Oklahoma Sooners.

“Texans owe a debt of gratitude to the first responders who put themselves in harm’s way to secure lives in times of emergency” Gov. Perry said. “We are thankful to Gov. Henry and Beutler-Redd Ranches for giving these emergency responders a well deserved reward and look forward to seeing the Longhorns and Sooners battle it out at next year’s game.”

“The Galveston County Emergency Management Team has worked up a Texas sized appetite during the recovery process after Hurricane Ike and is eagerly awaiting the ‘Oklahoma’ steak dinner courtesy of Gov. Perry and Gov. Henry” Galveston County Judge Jim Yarbrough said.

Emergency management teams helped evacuate more than 12500 Texans from coastal areas in the days preceding Hurricane Ike. In the days following Ike’s landfall these officials also rescued more than 3540 residents from coastal areas by air ground and water operated more than 300 shelters throughout the state and distributed thousands of truckloads of ice and water to residents affected areas.

As part of the wager twenty steaks were donated to the Galveston County Emergency Operations Center by Beutler-Redd Ranches. This year’s Red River Rivalry game pitted the then fifth ranked Longhorns against the top-ranked Sooners. The Longhorns beat the Sooners 45-35.
